Ocean habitat to shift north with warming seas Many marine animals are going to lose potentially large swathes of suitable habitat as seas warm up. Some critical ocean zones could possibly shift 600 miles up north, creating challenges for some species and coastal communities that have depended on specific fish for harvest and tourism. This could also lead to decline in population or inhibit recovery, which can also lead to a chain of reaction to loss of other organisms. In our classroom, this is an example of the food web/chain and the effects it has on their ecosystem. I chose this article because we don't often see blue whales that often in San Diego and they are a rarity to spot one, and the fact that many of our sea organisms are moving further away is a disappointment. Scientists are trying to help prevent this by; altering fishery regulations, revamping marine protected areas and making other regulatory changes.
