Article 15-Clean Water Act at 40
Since the passing of Clean Water Act of 1972, there have been mixed results. Dying lake are in good health, rivers no longer burn, and species are getting off the endangered list. However, there are places in the United States where progress has slowed. Their goals of eliminating the problems for safe and swimmable water have accomplished, but the invasive species are causing harm to the environment, which is not covered by the Clean Water Act. Furthermore, other problems such as sea-level rise and ocean acidification. With this fact, a new legislation will be needed to protect our water. One way of attempting to deal with such pollution is to pipe storm water farther out to sea before discharging it, A better approach, scientists suggest, is to prevent polluted storm water from reaching the ocean in the first place.
I chose this article because it demonstrates the effect of our legislation on the environment. Despite all the regulations and laws we have there continues to be serious problems among other environments because one simple act does not necessarily cover all other issues. This is when the public needs to come in action because the environment it seems is the last thing that the government is concerned about, however if we convince the public to start a movement and start caring then this helps them see how much we want things to change for the better. Everyone could start by contributing in small ways for example; growing gardens or picking up their trash
